The next generation of DMG backlighting has arrived.
Nonfinite Electronics started backlighting in early 2007, based off of the famous tutorial by Der Warst. Over time, the processes used to backlight DMGs changed, from simply removing a resistor and replacing an LED to a somewhat more complex, thorough method involving the removal of several components, frosted glass mirror, and two or more wide angle LEDs. From there it changed further to employ mirrored acrylic with several layers of diffusion both above and to the side of the panel to provide more even diffusion of light along with added durability and high quality polarized films to allow for screen inversion.
Now, by combining all of the earlier tried and tested methods into one, Nonfinite Electronics is happy to announce the release of premodified Game Boys and Do It Yourself Kits.
Benefits
Economical - These backlights require fewer parts than any previous version of backlighting employed by Nonfinite Electronics, which means savings for you. Premodified units are now available at a fraction of the price of earlier builds offered here and elsewhere.
Efficient - The LEDs in these modules make for a more efficient, brighter, well dispersed light than ever before, meaning your power draw will be less than all previous multiple LED builds, thus your batteries will last longer, and your LCD will look better while doing it. Furthermore, the whole installation takes place on the top half of the Game Boy. Unlike other methods of backlighting, which involve placing components inside the case near the battery compartment, everything is done on the front PCB, meaning you'll have space to add more modifications of your choice to the bottom, such as Trash80's Arduinoboy.
Customizable - Units can now be backlit in six different colors, with inverting available for each color type, leaving you with twelve different options in how you want your LCD to look! Other methods have a much more limited color selection.
Long Lasting - LEDs last longer than EL solutions. LED lifespans have been shown to last up to 100,000 hours!
There are currently two versions of the pro backlighting module available: a 3mm thick single led version and a 1.5mm thick dual led version. Both are the same price. The 1.5mm dual led version comes in white, pink, red, yellow, green, and blue. The 3mm single led modules come in white, red, blue, and green.
Switches can be installed into your custom modded DMG. These switches, which can be seen at the gallery, are used to turn the backlight on and off. They are NOT necessary, however. Power consumption on these modules are very low! Installing your module to turn on and off as the unit itself switches on or off is also a fine choice. Switches are currently available in two options: toggle and rocker.
Your backlit LCD can have it's rear polarizer turned 90 degrees in order to INVERT the LCD. This means activated pixels will now allow light through, while inactive pixels will not. See the gallery for many examples of normal and inverted LCDs in combined with all of the various module color options available. Once have closed up your Game Boy, be it with a normal or inverted LCD, it will stay inverted or normal unless the rear polarized film is rotated manually again. You can, however, make your LCD appear to be in it's opposite setting by adjusting your contrast dial up or down, but this won't be an actual inversion of your LCD, just a trick of the eye.
